Smoked Porter
Dear Brethern,
I must tell you of a good beer, a beer with the Church's blessing. Bottled in Juneau, the 2008 Alaskan Smoked Porter is a beer worthy a big state. The "alder-smoking to the malts" create a flavor of smokey bacon greatness. It is creamy and smooth with a touch of bitterness on the front, and comfort on the back.
It's a beer for dark days and red meat. I wish I had some venison. It's one of my favorite beers this year.
Cheers,
RD

Speak of the devil! I've had a bottle of this in the fridge since I picked up the Lucky 13th Red. Since my family is finally clear of H1N1, I was planning on cracking it open tonight to enjoy with black bean burgers and spiced potato wedges. I'll report back tomorrow!
Jim,
That sounds like a good meal!

Erin and I tried this last night. It went well with the meal, but isn't something I'd drink every day. The smoke was less intense than I had expected, which was good. The first taste was nice, but as the beer warmed (and the flavors built up in my mouth), the sweetness started to get a little cloying. I wanted the hops that kicked in on the backside to enter the fray earlier to balance things out some more. I'd drink it again, but wouldn't want more than one a night. Kind of an anti-session beer. Erin (who is currently on a huge porter kick)didn't care for it. She said the coffee flavors were too strong, and complained of an acidity in the aftertaste for which she didn't care.
i have had this beer on a number of occasions and i am not terribly excited about it. i was surprised that it won so many awards. i found the smokey flavor uneven at times. somewhere between pleasant to having my face pushed into a smokey fire. seeing the price go up from $2 to $5, was also a turn off.
